Global Journalism: Understanding World Media Systems
Edited by Daniela V. Dimitrova
The second edition of Global Journalism: Understanding World Media Systems offers a comprehensive overview of the evolving landscape of global journalism and the diverse media systems operating around the world. Edited by Daniela V. Dimitrova, this volume explores how journalism is shaped by political, economic, cultural, and technological contexts across various regions.
Providing both theoretical foundations and contemporary case studies, the book begins with classic frameworks—such as the Four Theories of the Press—and expands into more nuanced models suited for today’s interconnected media environment. It introduces students to key concepts in global journalism, including media freedom, international news flows, professional ethics, and journalism education.
This updated edition places particular emphasis on emerging technologies such as generative AI and the impact of social media on global news cultures. It also addresses pressing challenges like fake news, disinformation, and the use of media in soft power and public diplomacy. Topical case studies, including the FIFA World Cup in Qatar and the controversy over a doctored image of the Princess of Wales, help bridge theory with real-world developments.
An essential resource for journalism and media students, this book equips readers with the tools to critically understand and engage with the global media landscape of the 21st century.
